As part of my gig I get to teach a couple of college courses each semester. Some of them are on really cool topics, like working in a multicultural society. Tonight, as I was discussing how the media portrays minorities, I brought up the example of Tonto.
There were 35 vacant eyes staring back at me.
For the first time ever, I was in front of a group of students so young they had no reference for Tonto.
God damn it, I'm old.

I refuse to believe in "old" especially since I know this guy in Friendly, WV who is turning 40 in November.
I'd love to take your class, FG. How minorities are portrayed in film and media is an interest of mine.
Hiya Elvis! I've missed you. I hope your friend in Friendly has a great 40th bash! Mine, 5 years ago, wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
See, if Disney went ahead and made that 'Lone Ranger' movie with Johnny Depp as Tonto, your references would be culturally relevant again!
But seriously? They never heard "Kemosabe" or anything like that?
Does one of your students only have one eye? Or is there one student with 3 eyes? Either way, that's kinda cool... ----C
Ian: Not one person knew the reference. I didn't believe it at first.
Cara: Nice one! Shoulda said "35 sets." Good catch :)
They didn't know Tonto? I thought everyone knew that. It's that major city in Canada right?
I'm not that much younger than you, but I wouldn't have gotten it either. TV was scarce in my day.
