My Top 5: Movies That Are Overrated

We love 'em and gush over them at the time. Years later--after some wear and tear, and after watching some flicks we might like a bit more--we realize maybe that movie wasn't so special after all.

Here is My Top 5: Movies That Are Overrated:

Field Of Dreams (1989): Corn, baseball and Kevin Costner--how much more boring could a premise be? I get the sentimental part, and I liked the acting of James Earl Jones. But this movie reached a status and has a following that I just don't get.

Easy Rider (1969): C'mon, you know it's true. Take out the drugs and the counterculture experience, and you got Wild Hogs.

The Piano (1993): I have no memory of this flick after that scene of Harvey Keitel's bare ass. I think it gave me a migraine.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000): This flick and NyQuil helped me sleep through a week of the flu.

Forrest Gump (1994): Gump lost me when he became a ping-pong professional. And when he met JFK. And then again when he went on that cross-country run. Hell, I just realized I hated the whole box of chocolate.

Agree, disagree or tell me your list.

Forrest Gump is a great movie. I guess its not very realistic but I didn't know that was a requirement of a good movie. In fact I think the out of the ordinary stuff is one of the ways to keep a movie like that interesting. I like crouching tiger. I think the only reason is because its kind of unique and had beautiful scenery. The fight scenes were also pretty rad. I'm not quite sure how you found it boring but to each his own. However, I agree with the other three.
BTW I would like to see a list of under rated movies sometime too.

Hey Willy: To bve perfectly honest, I disliked Gump first when I realized they used blue screen magic to remove Dan's legs on the shrimper boat scene. For some reason, it pissed me off. And then I began to get all pissy about all the other stuff that seemed way over the top. I know it's a book and all, and I realize it's a commentary on society, but it's not what I dig in a movie.

Tiger It was a beautiful movie. It just bored me is all.

Well, we're not on the same page in the hymnal this time, FG, but I'm in complete agreement with you on Gump. It was a great movie, but it wasn't that great. I would have liked to have seen the chess story from the book included in the movie.

Hiya Hoyt: I thought of you as I started preparing this list. In fact, I kinda figured (and hoped) you would disagree. I really enjoy these movie conversations with you when we get together, and thought maybe this would jump-start another. :)

1. Mmm, I'm kinda torn. That last scene w/ his Dad kills me. So I forgive it.

2. Agreed!
Soundtrack = Great
Jack Nicholson = Great
Bikes = Great
Wait a minute, on second thought I love this movie. So nevermind.

3. Yaaawn. Agreed.

4. Hmmm, I like me some Chow Yun Fat, so I gotta disagree. Sorta.

5. I hate this movie and don't understand what's supposed to be so great about it. So yeah, you nailed this one.

Great post!

Hey Jackie: You could convince me on Easy Rider over a couple of beers. I loved that movie for a long time, and it's only the last couple of years I've been feeling the way I do now that it's overrated. But, I do.

Me and Easy Rider... that takes me back, saw it on cable late at night one summer when I was in between colleges. Fell in love with "The Weight" by the Band because of the movie.
One of these days, I'm going to be Captain America.

Hey, FG, I kinda figured that! 8) I do have more to say, but I'll just weigh in on FOD for now and maybe post on this later.

Field of Dreams should really be called "Playing Catch With Dad," and somehow Costner and co. manage to wring the emotion without being cloying. Like Jackie noted, that last scene absolutely kills me!

I think we've had the Forrest Gump discussion before but I still love that movie. The soundtrack alone is excellence. But you just have to kinda let it play out and not over think it.
I like Field of Dreams too. And I'm really not sure why but I always have to watch 5 minutes of it if it's playing. I guess it's kinda like a mystery.

I agree with the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon though. That prevented me from watching subtitled movies for about 4 years.

I'd add "Kill Bill" to this list..totally overrated.

Kill Bill kicked ass- parts 1 and 2. Sorry, AllClick, but that is one my favorite movies right after Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Killing Zoe, Dusk Before Dawn, Four Rooms, True Romance, Natural Born Killers, and Jackie Brown.

I've never seen The Piano or Easy Rider so I can't comment. I hate to say this but I'm kind of biased against hippy shit and I know I shouldn't be that way. Nevertheless, I don't think I could be fair about it. The only movie I liked from the 60's was Dr. Strangelove.

I watched about fifteen minutes of Crouching Tiger before I had to take it out (and I actually like most of those Japanese flicks).

Forrest Gump was alright, but I do think it was overhyped.

And I agree wholeheatedly about Field of Dreams- that movie would be a total waste if it wasn't for James Earl Jones.
