My Geekness Runneth Over

In the cash-green wake of it's recent hit, Iron Man, Marvel Studios has announced plans for upcoming super-hero based flicks, including:

  • Iron Man 2, with a release date of April 30, 2010. It looks as if all the cast will remain intact for the sequel;

  • Thor, with a release date of June 4, 2010. With no lead signed, I'm now in the process of growing my blonde locks longer;

  • The First Avenger: Captain America, to be released May 6, 2011. Let's hope the red and blue divide in this country is healed by the time Cap arrives. Otherwise, Mr. Rogers will be sorely disappointed;

  • The Avengers, to be released in July, 2011. I'm most excited about this super-hero team-up. If it's done well, DC might finally be tempted to put out a decent production of the much cooler Justice League of America.

Oh!

And the press release also announced a possible production of Ant-Man.

(They had me up until that Hank Pym moment.)

They're saying Matthew Mcconaughey is who they want for Captain America... which doesn't work. He's too old. Cap would appear to be in his early to mid-20s. He was essentially a teenager when he joined the Army in World War II. He'd be the youngest looking of the group, though obviously the most experienced hero.
Plus, against a cast like Ed Norton/ the Hulk, Robert Downey Jr/ Iron Man, Samuel L. Jackson/ Nick Fury and probably Lance Bass or Ryan Seacrest as Ant-man (Ant-man sucks), Matt ain't even in the same ballpark, not and be able to pull off what would amount to the central character of The Avengers.

I don't get the idea of casting Mcconaughey either, particularly with what appears to be Marvel's focus on character driven stories.

Where's Prince Namor?!

Ah, forget it. You wretched primitives could never capture the glory of the King of Atlantis on celluloid anyways.

Making a movie of Ant-Man is proof positive that Marvel is on a serious role, and could get just about anything made right now.

It would never happen now, but I think Matt Damon would make a great Steve Rogers/Captain America.

Ant-man, as played by the guy from the Old Dell Commercial... Dude, you're getting a Dell.

This is how much I love Ant-man.

I could stand Matt Damon as Cap, but he's a little old, too. It's going to have to be somebody off the radar to work.

And for Namor, he'd never do it, but Tom Cruise kind of has the eyebrow thing going, is sort of nuts and known for losing his temper. If they could get Ed Norton, known for being difficult, to be Bruce Banner and Robert Downey Jr, known for being a drunk, an addict and a womanizer, to be Tony Stark, wouldn't Cruise sort of fit. He's sort of likable in his unlike unlikability -and don't count out the scientology angle there's probably something in one of L. Ron Hubbard's books about rising from Atlantis.

Jackie: I'll bet Namor shows up in the Captain America flick. At least briefly. He's too much a part of that story not to.

Ian and Bill: I think Ant-Man is one of the silliest characters, but I suppose since he was one of the founding members of The Avengers they hafta put him in somehow. I can't see a full length flick starring him, though.

Hey, wait a minute. I know our church has liberalized our views toward Marvel heresy in order to win new converts, but what about all the great DC movies coming out- well, all two of of them anyway. The Dark Knight and The Justice League.

There's rumors about a Green Lantern movie, but then again, the Justice League movie might end up just being a rumor too like the Aquaman series they had planned for the CW.

Hell, we really are losing the culture war. Damn you, Iron Man.

:)

The war's been lost, Rev. I'm sorry. But just like in that comic book, where it says people won't be able to buy or sell without the mark of that beast or whatever on their foreheads, we DC-ites have lost the war.

We might as well accept and embrace it...

:)

Never!

We are like the Hillary Clinton of comic books we aren't giving up until every superhero in the Justice League and the Justice Society are counted and get their share.

We will not be silent until we get our Booster Gold, Green Arrow, Teen Titans, Mr. Majestic, Black Canary, and Zatanna movies on the big screen all over the country- including the states of Florida and Michigan.

;)

There isn't an actor alive who has the hair to be Booster Gold.

DC plays it so conservatively with their movies. Their best properties they stay away from. Look how long it took for them to get The Watchmen to the screen. I'd love to see a Suicide Squad or Doom Patrol movie. It's never going to happen.

Rumor also has it that there is a Green Arrow film in the works titled "Super Max" -about Green Arrow going to jail.

I agree, Bill.

Please tell me you're joking about the Green Arrow movie. Of all the superheroes to get thrown in jail- not Oliver Queen! I suppose the Black Canary will come visit him on her motorcycle and we'll have to sit through an hour of them talking and crying on those red phones separated by plexiglas.

Hollywood, you're killing favorite comic books!

Elvis,
Nope. Not kidding, but given DC's track record, but it's as likely to happen as me getting Samuel L. Jackson to star as me in the movie of my life. If it does happen, they'll drop the superhero thing.
Hollywood screws up most comics. The new Wanted movie coming makes me want to throw up. They took a cool idea about the supervillains wiping out all the superheroes and quietly taking over the world and turned it into what looks like one long commercial for a video game.

I don't know, Bill, I think I'd like to see Samuel L. Jackson play the starring role in a movie about your life. Mine too. And Film Geek's, Jackie's, and Hoyt's. Isn't there any way we could talk him into it?

But you're right and I can't argue. When I read your comment one of the first movies that came to mind was Catwoman. I didn't think there was any way they could screw up a movie about Selena Kyle, but they did it.
