This Would Be Worse Than Nipples On The Bat Suit

Uh...

I'm prayin' it's a hoax.

From the Daily News:

"Comic book fanboys across the globe are all atwitter after fresh reports that Eddie Murphy will play the Riddler in the next "Batman" movie.

The Sun reported today that Christopher Nolan has tapped Murphy for the role in the follow-up film to "The Dark Knight," which is rumored to be titled "Gotham." The unconfirmed rumor contradicts earlier whispers that Johnny Depp would reinvent the role in the new film, which is slated to hit theaters in 2010. The Sun also says that Shia LeBeouf has been tapped to play Robin, and Rachel Weisz will portray Catwoman.

Said an insider to the British tabloid. "Eddie's a fantastic addition. Everyone's excited to see what he does as the Riddler."

This may be one of the worst ideas EVER.

For sure. I'm still hoping it isn't true...

I honestly don't know which would be worse -- Murphy as Riddler or LeBeouf as Robin.

Either one has TOTAL FAIL written all over it.

Still crossing my fingers it's a hoax. But yeah, if true either way is a disaster.

(I think it's a hoax...)

I'm not sure they should even ever deal with Robin in the Nolan movies.

Murphy as the Riddler??

The Riddler, Catwoman AND Robin? Way too many characters for my tastes. Why not just add Catwoman? She can play villian and love interest. Rachel Weisz in leather lapping milk from a bowl would be plnety. Maybe flesh out Harvey Dent as two-face a little bit. i hope the Eddie Murphy/Shia Lebeouf thing turns out to be false.

But... at the same time, aren't we all hoping for an out of the box sort of surprise with the next villain? After Brokeback Mountain, would anybody have really thought of Heath Ledger as the Joker? Did anyone expect him to be so good as to make Nicholson's Joker twenty years back seem like only a variation on Cesar Romero's twenty years before?

If he sticks to form, he'll go for a heavy hitter nobody would put in this. I'd go with Leo Dicaprio or Casey Affleck.

But... again, I don't think we're going to get the riddler without a major rewrite of the character. The Joker, The Scarecrow, Two-Face and Raj A Ghul are all very dark characters. The Riddler is a lightweight. He's a thief. So, also are the penguin and catwoman.

He's more likely to go the other way and bring in heroes, make it about the heroes hunting the Batman, which would both twist the story and launch other franchises. Eddie Murphy could be a Wonder Twin.
